Have you had a chance to read our latest blog yet? If you have, then you already know about some of the dangers of using teething gels. Teething gels may go a long way to easing your baby’s discomfort when they are teething, but the risk isn’t worth the benefit. Luckily, there are lots of other ways to comfort your baby while they are teething. The following is a list from our family dentist in Edmonds of a few of the safer alternatives to teething gels:
- Rub their gums – Wash your hands, and use your finger to gently run your baby’s gums. If you are uncomfortable using your finger, you can also try using a gauze pad that is clean and moistened. The pressure will help to comfort your baby.
- Cool them off – Chilled teething rings, spoons and washcloths can all be great options. Keep in mind that you don’t want to give them anything that is actually frozen because extremely cold items can be bad for your baby.
- Cold foods – Has your baby already started to eat solid foods? If so, give them cold foods, like yogurt or applesauce. They will soothe their gums and fill their bellies!
- Teething jewelry – Teething babies will gum anything within reach, so teething jewelry is a great option. Just make sure that your teething jewelry is BPA and toxin free.
